Anxiety Attack
OH GAWD.
O level English oral's next thursday!
This is the time where apprehension engulfs you and you feel perched precariously on a suspended tight rope.
Going there without a single clue on what's gonna come up? That's like heading to the guillotines without having your head on.
Anyway. Was reading through the Straits Time Star Blog. And this topic on the forum was-
" Why must speak good English leh?"
There could be a possibility i may be clairvoyant right?
Maybe...just MAYBE, the topic that might come up on thursday would be similar to this.
Something like this was written in the papers too yes? About the standard of English in Singapore deproving or whatever.
SO, if they DO ask me something like it, i would go:
YES, i totally agree that it is indeed deteriorating. Abysmal, mediocre, horrible english i hear these days. People think its okay to speak singlish just because they feel it constitutes what makes us Singaporeans.
I'm fine with speaking singlish at the right time, but it shouldn't be made a habit. Singlish is one thing, bad grammer is an even major issue.
Good grammer is undeniably, a very important factor we should not omit. Sure, chinese is just as important (palpable since the government is also trying to promote that speak chinese campaign).
Sure, it would be great if we were to be multi-lingual, but i feel that if we are going to speak a language (any language at all), we should speak it well.
I can't deny the fact that we tend to conform to the ways we were brought up, how we speak as we grow up. I admit that my chinese isn't exactly perfect. In fact, it is terrible-and always broken. There's always the english accent swarming it, and little dithering parts.
Another influence on how we speak would be the company we keep. I can't stand what my sister told me the other day about her not being able to speak english round one of her friends-know why?- because she'll just be perceived as 'trying to act'.
That has got to be the most anal thing i've ever heard. If speaking english means we are trying to be all uppity and high class bitches, the government wouldn't be trying to promote its importance nor would it be an international language. Inane. So, i think first of all, we should mix with the right kind of people, who wouldn't scoff at us when we speak good English.
Okay. I would probably have to tidy that answer up abit. But that was pretty coherent, yes? ((:
gahhhh. Wish me luck!
